The same quirky beauty found in the delightful homes of New Orleans can be captured and treasured in your own home with a small investment, a little time and a creative desire to fashion something amazing outside the box of commonplace. After all, it's your home, your choice, your creative artistry on display.
The hardness rating-this is determined by a unique system from The Porcelain Enamel Institute and is called the PEI Scale. Normally the harder the tiles are the more durable they will be. They are also the most expensive. The PEI Scale rates the porcelain from zero to five. The hardest is five so if you want porcelain flooring tiles that will last several years in spite of high foot traffic you should choose a hardness of four or five. For low foot traffic areas you can go with a lower rate.
For classic style and elegance, nothing beats hardwood. This type of flooring adapts to all shapes of stair treads and is available in a range of different wood species, finishes and colours. Oak is renowned for its hardness and durability and is therefore a popular choice in high-traffic areas; however, most other species of hardwood (yellow birch, maple, etc.) can be used on stairs. Wood can vary in price significantly, depending on the species and finish chosen.
